SUMMARY:The Spirit of Cinema — A JST-SCU x DSPT Joint Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Spirit of Cinema: Miracles and Wonder in Biblical Epics art exhibition at Manresa Gallery\, JST-SCU through the spring semester\, with a joint exhibition at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology on Vine Street: The Spirit of Cinema: Illuminating the Journey of Faith. \nThis exhibition of film posters from the early days of cinema to today explores ways in which Biblical epics can illuminate the journey of faith for pilgrims courageous enough to enter the world of their imagination. \nAs Benedict XVI observed\, “To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God” (“Apostolic Journey to Compostela\,” 2010). \nThe exhibition is a shared endeavor between the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology and JST-SCU.  As such\, it represents decades of ongoing collaboration that is the hallmark of the Graduate Theological Union.\n\n\n\n \nSong of Bernadette Film Screening \n5:00pm\, Friday\, February 28\, 2025 (Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara\, Berkeley) \nJoin us for the Song of Bernadette (1943) film screening with an introduction and remarks from James Martin\, SJ (JST-SCU). \n  \nPilgrimage Film Fest \nSaturday\, March 1\, 2025 (Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology\, Berkeley) \nJoin us for our Pilgrimage Film Festival hosted at DSPT in conjunction with the joint exhibition\, The Spirit of Cinema.  A day of popcorn and movies featuring stories of sacred journeys & special guests. \n

SUMMARY:Contemporary Art as/in Pilgrimage and Sacred Site: A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The symposium seeks to explore contemporary art as pilgrimage and sacred site as the foundation for a new interdisciplinary project that draws into relationship the wealth of research arising out of pilgrimage and ritual studies\, contemporary art history and criticism\, anthropology\, and religious and theological studies\, with a particular focus on how artists perceive and conceive notions of sacred journey. \nWe will explore such questions as: Are galleries\, museums\, art expos\, and art installations the new “slow spaces” for spiritual sustenance and transcendent experiences? How are temples\, churches and other “religious” sites transformed by artist installations intended to invoke deep spiritual encounter and healing? And how is the art of contemporary artists working in a diversity of media and practice seen through the lens of pilgrimage. \nThe symposium’s overarching theme will be presented by keynote speaker\, Kathryn R. Barush. Barush’s research explores the idea of the perceived transfer of “spirit” from sacred spaces to representations through a critical examination of contemporary art (including assemblages of souvenirs\, built environments\, reconstructions of sacred sites\, and–most recently–photographs as saintly relics) created after or during pilgrimages with the intent to engender the experience for others.  A pattern is emerging\, Barush argues\, in which artwork\, experienced on pilgrimage\, engenders (and–as a souvenir–helps to sustain) a sense of movement\, connection\, and communitas. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to build their own practice of intentional looking on a pilgrimage to St. John the Divine with Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt\, Associate Professor of Art and Art History at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain\, Georgia and author of Redeeming Vision: A Christian Guide to Looking at and Learning from Art (Baker\, 2023). \nRegister Here
