SUMMARY:Contemporary Art as/in Pilgrimage and Sacred Site: A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The symposium seeks to explore contemporary art as pilgrimage and sacred site as the foundation for a new interdisciplinary project that draws into relationship the wealth of research arising out of pilgrimage and ritual studies\, contemporary art history and criticism\, anthropology\, and religious and theological studies\, with a particular focus on how artists perceive and conceive notions of sacred journey. \nWe will explore such questions as: Are galleries\, museums\, art expos\, and art installations the new “slow spaces” for spiritual sustenance and transcendent experiences? How are temples\, churches and other “religious” sites transformed by artist installations intended to invoke deep spiritual encounter and healing? And how is the art of contemporary artists working in a diversity of media and practice seen through the lens of pilgrimage. \nThe symposium’s overarching theme will be presented by keynote speaker\, Kathryn R. Barush. Barush’s research explores the idea of the perceived transfer of “spirit” from sacred spaces to representations through a critical examination of contemporary art (including assemblages of souvenirs\, built environments\, reconstructions of sacred sites\, and–most recently–photographs as saintly relics) created after or during pilgrimages with the intent to engender the experience for others.  A pattern is emerging\, Barush argues\, in which artwork\, experienced on pilgrimage\, engenders (and–as a souvenir–helps to sustain) a sense of movement\, connection\, and communitas. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to build their own practice of intentional looking on a pilgrimage to St. John the Divine with Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt\, Associate Professor of Art and Art History at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain\, Georgia and author of Redeeming Vision: A Christian Guide to Looking at and Learning from Art (Baker\, 2023). \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:The Blackfriars Gallery Presents: “Reimagining: Faith\, Hope and Love” by Deborah Joan Lanino
DESCRIPTION:Reimagining: Faith\, Hope\, and Love features approximately 20 paintings by Los Angeles based visual artist\, Deborah Lanino\, made between 2020 and 2024. One could say art is in her DNA\, going back to Renaissance Italy. These selected works were inspired by an ancestral\, spiritual and art infused pilgrimage that reflects a contemporary view of traditional subject matter seen in Renaissance art. \nThe exhibition consists of several sections\, the first honors the legacy of Bernardino and his workshop\, the second is inspired by faith and scripture and the third is a meditation on pilgrimage and renewal. These heartfelt paintings exude timeless and transcendent tones. Through these paintings Deborah is able to create conversations rooted in classical techniques such as chiaroscuro (light and dark contrasts)\, sfumato (soft\, misty brushstrokes)\, pentimento (painting over)\, glazes and impasto (thin transparent layers and thickly applied paint). \nReimagining: Faith\, Hope\, and Love concludes with paintings inspired by scripture\, as in her canvas\, “The Sower” – a growth parable also painted in themes and variations by master artists: Millet (1850’s)\, Van Gogh (1880’s) and Lichtenstein (1980’s)\, who Deborah met while working at the MOMA in New York. The meditative nature of these works invite the viewer to see that we are all connected. Deborah blends together past and present\, her work echoing  themes of transcendence that diffuses grief and loss\, the goal of which is to thoughtfully engage\, uplift and bring positivity to the viewer.

SUMMARY:The Sixth Annual Borsch-Rast Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Graduate Theological Union is pleased to host Dr. Kathryn Barush\, Thomas E. Bertelsen Jr. Associate Professor of Art History and Religion\, for the sixth annual Borsch-Rast Lecture for her 2021 publication\, Imaging Pilgrimage: Art as Embodied Experience (Bloomsbury Visual Arts). \nIn her acclaimed book\, Dr. Barush explores contemporary artworks created after pilgrimage experiences\, which are intended to act as a catalyst for the embodied experience of others. Each chapter focuses on a contemporary artwork that links one landscape to another—from the Spanish Camino to a backyard in the Pacific Northwest\, from Lourdes to South Africa\, from Jerusalem to England\, and from Ecuador to California\, ultimately comprising the first full-length study to engage contemporary art that has emerged out of the embodied experience of pilgrimage. \n“Dr. Barush invites readers to see with fresh eyes the forms and roles of pilgrimage in contemporary society\,” said Dr. Judith Berling\, a member of the Borsch-Rast selection committee\, Professor Emerita of Chinese and Comparative Religions\, and former Dean at the GTU. “The interdisciplinary approach of Imaging Pilgrimage explores often ignored dimensions of religious pilgrimages and focuses our attention not solely on verbal explanations but on how the material aspects of pilgrimage express meanings to those who experience them.” \nDr. Barush will be joined by Dr. Simon Coleman\, who will be responding to her book. Dr. Coleman is Chancellor Jackman Professor\, Department for the Study of Religion\, University of Toronto and his most recent book is Powers of Pilgrimage: Religion in a World of Movement. \n  \nThe event will be hybrid with an in-person audience located in the GTU Dinner Board Room\, Flora Lamson Hewlett Library. Contact Sabrina Kennedy by February 21 by 5:00pm at skennedy@gtu.edu if you would like to attend in person. \nRead the GTU News announcement of the Sixth Annual Borsch-Rast Lecture and Book Prize here. \nLearn more about the Borsch-Rast Book Prize and Lectureship here.

SUMMARY:Discussing The Berkeley Art and Interreligious Pilgrimage Project
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Barush will discuss her work with The Berkeley Art and Interreligious Pilgrimage Project\, which is an invitation to create and experience art-infused pilgrimages in the Bay Area and beyond. It seeks to link sacred landscapes the world over to neighborhoods\, gardens\, and backyards as a way to connect with each other and our ancestors and as a catalyst for spiritual healing and even physical recovery. Her talk will explore the artworks and built environments that inspired the project and some future directions for growth.

SUMMARY:GTUx Live: Where Pilgrims Meet the World: Tales of Journeying with Hope and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Join Drs. Kathryn Barush and Mahjabeen Dhala in this GTUx Live conversation about the power of pilgrimage.\n\nDr. Her talk will explore the artworks and built environments that inspired the project and some future directions for growth.\n\nDr. Dhala’s talk will explore how Islamic practice is much informed by the paradigm of a spiritual journey that begins from and ends with a return to the Divine. Q4:100 alludes to the experiences of a pilgrim as someone who leaves home as a migrant towards God: prepared to face challenges\, having fallen in love with her destination. She will focus on rituals and artifacts to explore how Shias embody their faith\, past history\, present concerns\, and future aspirations through pilgrimage.
